Johnny Depp & Amber Heard’s 22-Year Age Gap: Was That a Factor in the Split?

News of another Hollywood couple heading to splitsville was revealed today.

E! News confirmed that Amber Heard has filed for divorce from husband Johnny Depp after roughly a year together, and while their whirlwind romance (which began after meeting on set for 2011's The Rum Diary) definitely raised some eyebrows, it was the 22-year age difference that really got people talking.

Depp, 52, defended his relationship with the 30-year-old actress. "We connect on a lot of levels but the first things that really got me was she's an aficionado of the blues," Depp told E! News in December 2015 at the L.A. premiere of Heard's latest movie, The Danish Girl.

"I would play a song, some old obscure blues song, and she knew what it was." The Black Mass star added, "She's very, very literate. She's a voracious reader as I have been, so we connected on that as well and she's kind of brilliant and beautiful. I'm a very lucky man."

However, in light of the recent news, we can't help but wonder if their age difference played a part in their decision to call it quits.

So, with that idea in mind, we decided to take a look back at a few famous couples who had a good number of years between them, and either made it work or fizzled out.

Bradley Cooper & Suki Waterhouse: With 17 years between them, it was no surprise why the actor and young model decided to go separate ways. "They remain friends but they both want different things right now," a source told E! News exclusively at the time. The source added that Cooper wanted to start a family, but "Suki isn't ready."

"She loves Bradley and he loves her but she's so young and wants to concentrate on her acting career before becoming a mom," the source says.
Ashton Kutcher & Demi Moore: After being married to the actor, who is 16 years her junior, for six years, the actress explained in a statement: "As a woman, a mother and a wife there are certain values and vows that I hold sacred, and it is in this spirit that I have chosen to move forward with my life," hinting at the allegations that surfaced at the time of Kutcher being unfaithful.

Kutcher also chimed in post-Moore's statement, tweeting, "I will forever cherish the time I spent with Demi. Marriage is one of the most difficult things in the world and unfortunately sometimes they fail. Love and light, AK."

Robin Wright & Ben Foster: These two former lovebirds, who are 15 years apart, attempted to make it work twice. The couple were engaged to be married before splitting up, getting back together, and then ending their engagement again in August 2015. The reason behind their breakup was not revealed.

Charlize Theron & Sean Penn: Although there was 15 years between them, the two actors had a strong foundation and seemed to be more in love with each other each time they were seen together. However, at one point, the stars shocked many by deciding to call it quits, and Theron made sure to trump any rumors surrounding the reason behind their separation.

"We were in a relationship and then it didn't work anymore. And we both decided to separate. That's it," she said.
Catherine Zeta-Jones & Michael Douglas: The famous couple, who are 25 years apart, took "some time apart to evaluate and work on their marriage" beginning in May 2013. However, in April 2015, they officially reconciled.

The actor told Ellen DeGeneres it only works "if both of you are willing you know to do it. It can't be a one-way street. I'm crazy about her...I think every couple has their difficult times. The only problem is, as you well know, we're all in the public eye and it tends to get a little more exposed than most. But we're back, stronger than ever."
