He
has already described Mexicans as disease-carrying "rapists,"
and vowed to build a giant wall to keep them out of America.
Now a group of Latino
students in California are fighting back against the xenophobic
views of Donald Trump and his supporters by wearing "Dump
Trump" shirts around campus.
It comes as a senior US
senator accused the business mogul of "building his campaign on
racism, sexism and xenophobia."
The Latino students, who were interviewed by the Guardian, said
they were disturbed by the number of Trump supporters at New Harbor School wearing campaign
t-shirts on their campus, which is 38% Latino and 53% white.
But
the last straw came when, they say, graffiti slogans such as "f***
wetbacks" and "f**** illegal aliens" were daubed on walls around
the high school.
It
followed an incident when the students were subjected to verbal racial abuse,
which they say made them feel "under attack."
They decided
to make t-shirts emblazoned with the words "Dump Trump" and wore them to school the following
Friday.
“With Donald
Trump, [students] are more open about their hate and the things they say,” Angelina
Alvarez told the Guardian.
However, the
school was unimpressed by the stunt and Ms Alvarez soon found herself being
summoned to the office of the principal, who demanded she changed out of the
offending shirt.
Principal Sean
Boulton said they had to stop wearing the shirts for their own safety, while Ms
Alvarez pointed out the school had no issues with Trump supporters wearing
their campaign shirts.
“They’ve worn
the shirts all this time, and we wear a shir
“It’s not
like we’re doing anything violent. We’re just standing up for ourselves.”
For his part, Mr
Boulton says the school has dealt with the racist graffiti problem by removing
it from the walls.
He also told the
Guardian he was unaware of Ms Alvarez and her friends being verbally
racially abused by other students.
“There’s
certainly a lot of things that go on on campus that are inappropriate … and as
information surfaces we don’t just ignore it," he said.
"We react
and we’re proactive in trying to resolve it."
After pressure
from a local attorney who said banning the shirts was unconstitutional, the
school has relented and now allows students to walk around campus in the
"Dump Trump" shirts.
“We opened up a
lot of eyes and we showed people that they can have voices too," Ms
Alvarez told the Guardian.
