THERE’S another reason for the TV industry to celebrate today as the TV WEEK Logie Awards staged a huge comeback in the ratings.
Despite critics complaining about the length of the broadcast — which ran almost an hour over its scheduled time — the glitzy award show pulled in an impressive 1.18 million viewers, up from 971,000 in 2015.
While the telecast benefited from not being pitted against reality juggernaut My Kitchen Rules which has defeated it in previous years, there’s no doubt the controversial list of Gold nominees also had people talking in the lead up to the night.
With Waleed Aly triumphing over his The Project co-star Carrie Bickmore, his impassioned speech was a highlight in a night which celebrated diversity on our TV screens.
However there were also plenty of light moments including Dave Hughes’ opening monologue which saw him take a not-so-subtle dig at broadcaster Nine’s flagship show 60 Minutes and Julia Morris’ rehearsed stumble on stage which had the room in stitches.
