The Bachelor: It's over

Author and actor Kirsten McKenzie wrote: "Seriously? Already? I was prepared to put money on it lasting a tad longer, like a month at least."

Bachelor Jordan Mauger has ended his fleeting relationship with bachelorette Fleur Verhoeven.

Verhoeven revealed the break up on TV3 this evening.

Mauger chose Verhoeven over Naz Khanjani in Monday night's highly anticipated Bachelor finale, an episode watched by 434,000 Kiwis.

"It has been something neither of us have ever had to deal with. He has been very respectful towards me and in all honesty I would rather have him tell me this now than tell me in a couple of months time. He was actually really respectful in saying this now," she told TV3's Story.

Mauger visited Verhoeven in her hotel room and delivered the devastating news this afternoon.

"A lot has happened in the last couple of hours. Jordon came to visit me and he pretty much explained how he is feeling and that he has decided that his feelings aren't mutual. He has decided he wants to leave it," she told Story.

The 26-year-old said she hadn't seen the break up coming and was saddened he didn't want to give their relationship a chance.

"I was quite surprised to hear that he doesn't want to give it a chance. It is what it is I guess."

Verhoeven said she didn't think Khanjani was the reason behind the break up.

"It is disappointing to see that Naz is acting the way she is. All I can say is that it is disappointing."

She said she didn't regret the experience she had had on the show however.

There's been speculation that Mauger asked to re-shoot the end of the show amid fears he'd chosen the wrong person, but the rumours were denied by MediaWorks this week.

Support for Verhoeven has flooded in on social media in the wake of her shock announcement.

One person wrote on her Facebook page: "Keep your chin up Fleur, you're a beautiful lady with a lovely personality and you always hold yourself well. Prince Charming will find you one day."

Another wrote: "So sorry for you Fleur. You deserve so much better and one day you'll be so thankful he did this."

Others suggested she cash in her ring and use the money to go on a holiday.

Hundreds have also taken to social media to comment on the announcement.

Radio personality Dominic Harvey wrote on Twitter that he had had baths that had lasted longer than the relationship between the Bachelor and Ms Verhoeven.

Tonight's announcement comes after a week of controversy involving fellow bachelorette Khanjani.

During an interview with media today, Khanjani admitted her relationship with Mauger ran deeper than anyone who watched The Bachelor realised. The runner-up confirmed she'd already slept with Mauger.

Speaking to The Edge radio station, Khanjani admitted she had slept with Mauger "more than once" and said: "I think I'm the only girl (to admit to it)."

Despite being harshly dumped by Mauger in the finale, Khanjani was the favourite to win - causing the hashtag '#TeamNaz' to trend on Twitter.

Angry Bachelor fans have put the heat on Mauger over his decision to break up with Verhoeven.

Many took to Facebook to condemn the Bachelor on his decision to end things with the 26-year-old. Several said he didn't deserve to be with Verhoeven.

One person wrote: "Why would you choose her just to humiliate and break her heart only 48 hours later," while another wrote: "I truly hope that you don't go to Naz, after her performance last night and the trash she has said on radio today it would be a real insult to Fleur to go to Naz but then maybe you two are just as bad as each other. Really disappointed in you Jordan."

Others questioned why he hadn't joined Verhoeven in making the announcement on live TV.
