The ongoing divorce drama between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard just keeps getting uglier. Disturbing text messages reportedly exchanged between Heard and Depp’s personal assistant, Stephen Deuters, leaked on Wednesday, June 1, and suggest that the actor had a long history of violence. The messages, obtained by Entertainment Tonight, are reportedly from May 2014, before the couple were married, a source told the outlet.
The Danish Girl actress, 30, filed for divorce from the Pirates of the Caribbean star, 52, on Monday, May 23. A few days later, Heard was granted a temporary domestic violence restraining order after detailing several instances of alleged abuse and showing photographic evidence of her injuries.
The text exchange begins with Deuters (whose name appears on the top of the screen only as “Stephen”) allegedly apologizing on behalf of a man, who supposedly is Depp. Entertainment Tonight notes they were not able to independently verify the recipients of the messages or whether they had been edited. Us Weekly was also unable to verify the authenticity of the texts.
Below are the alleged texts between Deuters and Heard:
Stephen: "Think he's just texted you. He's incredibly apologetic and knows that he has done wrong. He wants to get better now. He's been very explicit about that this morning. Feel like we're at a critical juncture."
Amber: "Yes but I don't know how to be around him after what he did to me yesterday. I don't know if I can stay with him."
Stephen: "He wants to see you so much. He's distraught."
Amber: "... Look, He thinks 'he doesn't deserve this'. Obviously he has no idea what he did or to the extent that he did it. If someone was truly honest with him about how bad it really was, he'd be appalled ... I'm sad that he doesn't have a better way to really know the severity of his actions yesterday. Unfortunately for me, I remember in full detail everything that happened."
Stephen: “He was appalled. When I told him he kicked you, he cried. It was disgusting. And he knows it. I wasn’t with him when he sent u the 2nd txt. He read it to me and I said it was the wrong text to send. He then sent the 3rd one and sat and cried again after on the bed. He's a little lost boy. And needs all the help he can get. He is so very sorry, as he should be."
Amber: "He's done this many times before. Tokyo, the island, London (remember that?!), and I always stay. Always believe he's going to get better ... And then every 3 or so month [sic], I'm in the exact same position."
The Black Mass actor and his team have denied all claims of domestic violence. His attorney, Laura Wasser, argues that Heard is “attempting to secure” financial gain with the allegations. Depp’s rep previously said in a statement prior to the abuse accusations on Thursday, May 26, that “hopefully, the dissolution of this short marriage will be resolved quickly.”
Heard’s lawyers later blasted Depp’s camp for trying to discredit her allegations. “Amber has suffered through years of physical and psychological abuse at the hands of Johnny. In domestic violence cases, it is not unusual for the perpetrator’s playbook to include miscasting the victims as the villain,” the Tuesday, May 31, statement read.
