THE first trailer for Benedict Cumberbatch’s Dr Strange has made its world debut.
It then shows Cumberbatch as neurosurgeon Stephen Strange, whose hands are destroyed after a car accident.
Searching the world for a cure, he encounters the Ancient One, played by Tilda Swinton, who tells him: “You’re a man looking at the world through a keyhole. You’ve spent your life trying to widen it.
“Your work saved the lives of thousands. What if I told you, that reality is one of many. You wonder what I see in your future? Possibility.
“There are other ways to save lives. There is so much you don’t know.”
He replies: “I don’t believe in fairytales about chakras or energy or the power of belief.”
But after she gives him a glimpse of what his new life can become, he begs her to teach him and she introduces him to the hidden world of magic and alternate dimensions and becomes his mentor in the mystic arts.
Cumberbatch has kept the character American, despite speculation that he would have stayed British, something die-hard fans might not have taken kindly to.
The trailer is a lot darker than the other Marvel movies, with fans already commenting it has an air of Batman Begins and Inception about it.
The trailer also introduces Cumberbatch’s co-stars Rachel McAdams, who plays one of Strange’s fellow surgeons and who becomes his reality anchor as he steps into his new magical role.
Fans were also treated to their first on-screen glimpse of Chiwetel Ejiofor who stars as Karl Mordo, a former student of the Ancient One.
Dr Strange is released in the UK in October.
